Introduction
Site update:
Another 100 new video links have been added. The video categories have again be re-organized.
This website will have new material being added when new content becomes available. I also share my views and this will be added when ready. Thank you to Lim Hwee Ming who has helped to set up this structure. I hope to improve on the design and layout in time to come.
Computer gaming addiction (or computer addiction for short) is a problem that concerns parents and currently there is little information or resources available locally to help them. Although the problem has been around for a long time, its seriousness has probably gone unnoticed. This website is meant to provide parents and professionals with information and resources as well as a platform where I can share my personal views.
The main focus is on computer addiction but information, research and views on other forms of addiction are also presented as addictions share many common features. I have written a lot on my views based on experience rather than research. I welcome comments and even disagreements. Maybe I am wrong on some issues and if so I will have to change my views on this.
Who am I?
My name is Sim Ngee Mong and I have been a social worker with MWS Covenant Family Service Centre for more than 20 years. I provide counselling for families on a wide range of issues, handle a helpline for parents over the phone, conduct parenting workshops and write parenting articles. This website is a project of Covenant Family Service Centre but the views presented here are entirely mine.
I have attended training on computer addiction and other forms of addiction but have no specialized certification. This means that I am not an expert in this area. I do have more knowledge and experience than the average counsellor and the views that I share are mainly based on my experience in working with parents.
Why this website
Computer addiction is a serious problem and there is no local resource point that address this issue. This website fills the gap and is written with a local perspective. Also, I believe more people can be helped if they are provided with the necessary information and resources. Counselling services could only help one family at a time. Workshops can help several families at a time but a website could reach out to the whole world.
My hope
My hope is that visitors to this site would write to me and provide information that I have missed and give me feedback. If you have benefitted in any way, your feedback would be a source of inspiration for me to improve on this work. If you disagree with what I say, I welcome a challenge to my thinking and if you have valid points, I stand corrected in my views. Without your feedback, this entire site would be a one man show.
